Networking

Last night LPZ hosted a cocktail hour where we invited anyone who was interested in Serengeti as a study area. We want to try to form a consortium of scientists and managers to help make communication, study and action more efficiently done for the region. It seemed pretty successful.

It was particularly a personal success for me since I was able to corner Dennis Rentsch and talk to him about prospects of studying sustainable development in the Serengeti. Dennis did his PhD work on alternate sources of meat to alleviate pressure on bushmeat. He now works with Frankfurt Zoological Society and has lived in the Serengeti for a number of years. He is definitely the best person to talk to about what is needed environmentally and economically for the region. I told him that before we have further discussions, I wanted to know if DeMark's state department job would put us near the region. He was happy to help and, I think, excited that someone was interested in applying the subject to the serengeti.

Plus 1 for Colleen!
